From the moment we arrive to the moment we leave, here’s exactly what happens.
Staging and Property Protection
Before any roofing work begins, the jobsite is carefully prepared to help protect your home and property. Our team stages materials, sets up safe work areas, and places tarps or protective coverings where needed to help shield siding, windows, walkways, lawns, shrubs, flower beds, and landscaping from roofing debris.
This step helps create a cleaner, safer, and more organized project from the start. By preparing the property first, we reduce unnecessary mess, protect the areas around your home, and make sure the roofing process is ready to move efficiently.
Removing the Old Roof
Once the property is protected, the existing roofing materials are removed down to the roof decking. This includes removing old shingles and related roofing layers so the roof structure underneath can be properly evaluated.
A full tear-off is important because it allows our team to uncover hidden issues that may not be visible from the surface. Instead of covering up old problems, we expose the roof deck so the new roofing system can be installed on a solid, reliable foundation.
Inspecting Decking and Flashing
After the old roofing materials are removed, our team inspects the roof decking, flashing, valleys, roof edges, penetrations, and other vulnerable areas. This helps us identify any soft, damaged, weakened, or rotted decking before the new roof is installed.
If damaged decking is found, it is replaced as needed so the new roofing system has a strong base to attach to. We also look closely at areas where water is most likely to enter, including around chimneys, vents, valleys, and transitions, to help ensure the roof is properly prepared for long-term protection.
Waterproofing the Roof System
A strong roof starts beneath the shingles. Before the visible roofing is installed, key waterproofing components are added to help protect the home from wind-driven rain, ice, snow, and moisture.
This may include new drip edge, ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment, and starter shingles. These layers work together to help direct water away from vulnerable areas and provide added protection at roof edges, valleys, eaves, and other high-risk points. When applicable, Top Gen Roofing can also highlight the specific ice and water protection products used on your project so you know exactly what is being installed.
Installing the New Shingles
Once the roof is properly prepared and waterproofed, the new shingles are installed. Our team focuses on proper alignment, fastening, overlap, valleys, edges, and overall appearance to help create a clean, durable, and professional finish.
This is the stage where the roof begins to take its final shape. Every row matters, from the starter shingles to the ridge line, because proper installation helps the roofing system perform as intended and gives the home a finished look that improves curb appeal.

Roof ventilation plays an important role in the long-term performance of the roofing system. Proper airflow helps reduce trapped heat and moisture in the attic, which can help protect the roof deck, support shingle life, and improve overall roof performance.
During the project, Top Gen Roofing reviews the home’s ventilation needs and can install ridge vent ventilation options when appropriate. This may include Lomanco ridge vents or other suitable ventilation solutions based on the structure of the home.
